Al Walaa wal Baraa PDF Print E-mail

Al Walaa Wal Baraa' is one of the Usul ud Deen. Usul ud Deen: has three usul:

1- AL TAWHEED
2- AL WALAA WAL BARAA
3- AL JIHAD & AL HIJRAH

The driving force behind all questions to do with: "are you british or Muslim? etc" is Al Walaa wal Baraa'…

AL WALAA WAL BARAA' is divided into two:

Walaa and Baraa is a part of Usul ud Deen, not an issue of hatred to the kuffar, we hate the kuffar as a matter of Deen for the sake of Allah (swt), it is nothing personal. We do not hate the jews for their noses or the way they look; Allah (swt) is the one who created their looks, our hate for them is for the sake of Allah alone.

1- Al Hubb

To Love for the Sake of Allah, or Al Muwalaat. Al Muwalaat Linguistically means 'Love in the heart.' Abdullah ibn Abbas said:

"Al Muwalaat is the Love in the heart and the total support by the limbs and the tongue for the Deen of Islam exclusively."

This rules out the kuffar, Walaa is always to Allah (and the Deen of Islam) Exclusively, and Al Baraa' is from kufr and Shirk.

Allah (swt) said:

"O you who believe, do not take the kafireen as awliyaa' instead of the Believers, do you wish to take Allah as a proof against you?" [EMQ 4: 144]

So we can only have Al Muwalaat with the Believers, but what is Al Muwalaat? It means:

- To Love
- To keep close to
- To befriend
- To accompany
- To help
- To respect
- To elevate
- To have alliance with
- To support

All things are for Allah (swt) and those who he ordered us to have Muwalaat with, not for the disbelievers.

2- Al Bughoud

Hatred for the sake of Allah, or Al Mu'adaat, this is the opposite of Al Muwalaat, it is:

- To Hate
- To keep distance from
- To be enemy to
- To desert
- To decline to help
- To disrespect
- To put down
- Not to ally with
- Not to support

Allah ordered us to have Baraa, from the kuffar and from kufr and shirk. He (swt) ordered us to have walaa with the Anbiyah' and the believers, However this is not to be confused with Al Birr. Al Birr is a special circumstance with those kuffar with which we have a covenant with.

 Allah (swt) said:

"Allah forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for Allah loves those who are just." [EMQ 60: 8]

Al Walaa wal Baraa' has the most explicit ayat clearly declaring it, more than any other thing in the Qur'an after Tawheed, it is not something that we can argue and dispute over. The Scholars known to have spoken the most regarding Al Walaa' Wal Baraa' and Al Tawheed were the Sahabah and the Four Imams, after them - Sheikh ul-Islam ibn Taymiyyah and Sheikh Muhammad ibn Abdul Wahhab.

On the topic of Al Walaa' Wal Baraa', Sheikh Abdul Rahman bin hasan said:

"The 3rd Negation of the Deen is Muwalaat with the Mushrikeen, to ally with them, rely on them and to support them with his hand and his Wealth. For Allah (swt) said: "Do not Support Al Kafireen in any way." [EMQ Qassas: 86]…"

He then went on to quote another ayah of Allah (swt) in Surah Qassas:

"O my Lord! For that Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace on me, never shall I be a help to those who sin!" [EMQ 28: 17]

Furthermore Allah (swt) said in Surah Mumtahanah:

"Allah only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out of your homes, and support (others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that are Al Zalimun." [EMQ 60: 9]

Here Allah (swt) has used Al Zalimun, and it is known that when Allah uses 'Al Zalimun' with 'Al', as opposed to just 'Zalimun', He (swt) means 'Al Kaafir'.Allah (swt) said in the Qur'an:

"Those who turn back as apostates after Guidance was clearly shown to them, - the Evil One has instigated them and busied them up with false hopes. This, because they said to those who hate what Allah has revealed, "We will obey you in part of (this) matter"; but Allah knows their (inner) secrets." [EMQ 47: 25-26]

Here Allah (swt) declared those who obey the kufr law even only in part to be Kafir, leaving no excuse for them, even duress, rather we must speak out against that evil, even to be silent is unacceptable. This was demonstrated in the time of Muhammad (saw): Khalid bin Waleed (ra) fought against Musailamah Kazab, who was the false Prophet. Khalid bin Waleed (ra) raided the city that Musailamah came from. He captured the leaders of the tribe. He asked the leader what he thought of his friend (i.e. Musailamah), he said: "He is a Messenger of Allah besides the other Messenger." That was enough for Khalid to order to "kill them all." And there was Ijma' on this, nobody from the Muslims objected. However when the leader was to be killed, he said: "Start with Maja'a." This was because Maja'a was a Muslim and a big figure in the tribe. Maja'a spoke to Khalid and said to him, "O Khalid, I am a Muslim; I never believed in Musailamah, he was only from my tribe." He wanted Khalid to free him, declaring his innocence. Khalid said: "Between freeing, and killing, there is a middle way; I will imprison you until Allah (swt) shows me a way." Maja'a thought that he imprisoned him in hope of extracting information about Musailamah, he called him and said: "O Khalid, you know me that I was among the people who gave bay'ah to Muhammad (saw). what was my crime? it just happened to be that he was from my tribe."

And Allah (swt) said:

"Every soul draws the mead of its acts on none but itself: no bearer of burdens can bear the burden of another. [EMQ An'am: 164]."

Khalid said:

"Your crime is that you never forbade the evil. You were the best at that time (as he was well-known in the tribe) and you were silent. Did you speak against him like those who spoke out? (so and so) spoke out, (so and so) spoke out. If you did not have the means to do so, did you write a letter to me? Did you ask for my help? Did you make hijrah?"

Khalid gave him no excuse for not speaking out against Musailamah, and in fact Maja'a was treated as Murtad, threatened with death if he did not repent, however Maja'a did retreat, but was still punished Ta'zir.

AL MUWALAAT IS FORBIDDEN FOR MUSLIMS WITH THE KUFFAR

"It is forbidden to have any form of Muwalaat with the Kafir, whether kafir asslie or Murtad."
Allah (swt) makes it clear that it is not acceptable for Muslims to have Al Muwalaat with the kuffar:
"O you who believe, do not take the kafireen as awliyaa' instead of the Believers, do you wish to take Allah as a proof against you?" [EMQ 4: 144]

Allah (swt) said:

"Let not the believers Take for friends or helpers Unbelievers rather than believers: if any do that, in nothing will there be help from Allah. except by way of precaution, that ye may Guard yourselves from them. But Allah cautions you (To remember) Himself; for the final goal is to Allah." [EMQ 3: 28]

Allah is the wali, of the believers, and the believers MUST have walaa' with Allah, the kuffar however are completely detached from Allah, and they are not allowed to have walaa' with the believers. If any Muslim makes any Muwalaat to the kuffar, it is sin, however if they ally with them, they will become Murtad (apostate). But if he allies with them and fights Muslims, he becomes Murtad Harbie (an apostate at war with the Muslims). We hate all the kuffar for the sake of Allah, and we hate the Munafiqeen for the sake of Allah, even those who have not yet left the fold of Islam.

IT IS OBLIGATORY FOR THE MUSLIMS TO HAVE AL MUWALAAT WITH THE MUSLIMS

Allah (swt) says:

"The Believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just and forbid what is evil: they observe regular prayers, practise regular charity, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy: for Allah is Exalted in power, Wise. Allah hath promised to Believers, men and women, gardens under which rivers flow, to dwell therein, and beautiful mansions in gardens of everlasting bliss. But the greatest bliss is the good pleasure of Allah. that is the supreme felicity." [EMQ 9: 71-72]

Al Muwalaat is obligatory between the believers, and Allah described us as a brotherhood, distinguishing us from the disbelievers.Allah (swt) says:

"The Believers are but a single Brotherhood: So make peace and reconciliation between your two (contending) brothers; and fear Allah, that ye may receive Mercy." [EMQ 49: 10]

And Allah (swt) says:

"O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily Allah guides not a people unjust. Those in whose hearts are a disease - thou see how eagerly they run about amongst them, saying: "We do fear lest a change of fortune bring us disaster." Ah! perhaps Allah will give (thee) victory, or a decision according to His will. Then will they repent of the thoughts which they secretly harboured in their hearts. And those who believe will say: "Are these the men who swore their strongest oaths by Allah, that they were with you?" All that they do will be in vain, and they will fall into (nothing but) ruin. O ye who believe! if any from among you turn back from his Faith, soon will Allah produce a people whom He will love as they will love Him,- lowly with the believers, mighty against the rejecters, fighting in the way of Allah, and never afraid of the reproaches of such as find fault. That is the grace of Allah, which He will bestow on whom He pleases. And Allah encompasses all, and He knows all things. Your (real) friends are (no less than) Allah, His Messenger, and the (fellowship of) believers, - those who establish regular prayers and regular charity, and they bow down humbly (in worship). As to those who turn (for friendship) to Allah, His Messenger, and the (fellowship of) believers, - it is the fellowship of Allah that must certainly triumph. O ye who believe! take not for friends and protectors those who take your religion for a mockery or sport, - whether among those who received the Scripture before you, or among those who reject Faith; but fear ye Allah, if ye have faith (indeed)." [EMQ 5: 51-57]

Furthermore Abu Huraira narrated that the Prophet (saw) said:

"A Muslims is a brother to another Muslim."
